At the time he was photographing The Age of Adolescence, Joseph Sterling was a student himself at Moholy-Nagy’s Institute of Design in Chicago where he studied photography under Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind and Frederick Sommer, with classmate Ray Metzker. Looking back now at this body of work in its entirety, it’s easy to see that America was on the verge of a sea change. The 60’s, Vietnam, drugs, the end of our naivete as a nation.Sterling’s photographs are the perfect confluence of subject, time and place. He captured an innocence that would be lost almost the second the Beatles crossed the pond.
