Sarah Pickering’s Explosions, Fires, and Public Order is a visually arresting glimpse into the secret world of civil defense by one of today’s up-and-coming artists. Combining four series, Explosions, Fires, and Public Order begins with Public Order, a project exploring the Metropolitan Police Public Order Training Centre, a simulated urban environment where officers rehearse responses to civic unrest. The Explosions series documents the tactical use of controlled explosions by the British military to add realistic stress to training exercises. The Fire Series and Incident, Pickering’s most recent work, were produced while she was an artist in residence at the UK Fire Training College. There, she photographed blazes set inside meticulously and elaborately constructed home interiors, as well as the stark, charred remnants of fake urban settings.
“The Power of the Invisible Sun”, Through his philanthropic work, Bobby Sager has come face to face with children living in some of the most war-torn areas of the world. His photographs capture their transcendent spirit : the power of the invisible sun. These photographs taken in Afghanistan, Rwanda, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, from September 11, 2001 until early 2009 depict refugees, orphans, child soldiers, and just plain kids living with conflict, disaster, and displacement. Sager’s poignant images are assembled in a visually arresting collection. Including a foreword by Sting, The Power of the Invisible Sun will inspire hope and activism through intimate encounters with these children and the human spirit that defines them. All of Sager’s proceeds from “The Power of the Invisible Sun” will go towards the hope is a game-changer projet which will deliver indestructible soccer balls into the hands of kids in the most difficult places around the world. Sager was inspired to help launch this project with Sting and inventor Tim Jahnigen because of a child soldier and his “ ball” featured in the book. Each indestructible ball is a lasting symbol of hope. A light no matter how small the power of the invisible sun.

Miguel Oriola is one of Spain’s most important photographers. This book focuses from a chronological perspective on photography as a tool for a new visuality and the rupture of the role of the spectator : photographic exhibitions from 1928 to 1955, from the spaces designed by Lissitzky’s to The Family of Man ; the trajectory of utopian architectural-photographic space and from post-Revolutionary Russia to America during the Cold War. This space documents the exhibitions designed by Lissitzky (Pressa, Film und Foto, etc) ; German, Italian and Spanish exhibitions in the 1930s, and exhibitions in MOMA during the Second World War. This book has been published on the occasion of the exhibition Universal Archive. The Condition of the Document and the Modern Photographic Utopia, organised by the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (23 October 2008 - 6 January 2009) and co-produced with the Museu Colecçâo Berardo-Arte Moderna e Contemporânea, Lisbon (9 March - 3 May 2009). The exhibition is organised around two large seccions : the first is a historical journey through some of the main debates on the photographic document in the modern period, approximately from 1850 to 1980. The second seccion positions this debate in the historical trajectory of Barcelona, understood as a specific case study.
Capitolio is a cinematic journey through the shadows of Caracas, Venezuela during « revolution ». In the tradition of William Kelin’s New York and Robert Frank’s The Americans, Magnum photographer Christopher Anderson creates an emotional portrait of a time and a place that is ripping apart at the seams. Rather than a didactic or journalistic approach, Anderson presents a poetic vision of a place where the violent and sensual coexist. The word Capitolio refers to the domed building that houses a government. In this book, Caracas itself becomes a metaphorical Capitolio. In place of walls, we have decaying modernist architecture built with petro dollars. They seem to suggest a time of opulence, but through the cracks grows a the jungle that betrays a rotting from within. The streets serve as stand-ins for the halls of this building where the human drama and political intrigue are played out.
Imaginez un New York dépourvue de personnes, ses rues vides, des ponts et des voies navigables comme le silence et magnifique comme Ansel Adams paysage. C’est le New York que Christopher Thomas révèle en duotone photos qui sont à la fois nostalgique et obsédante. Employant un grand format photo Polaroid, Thomas abattu un grand nombre de ces images dans les premières heures du jour ou avec de longues expositions. Le résultat est un rare aperçu de la Brooklyn Bridge sans piétons ; Grand Central Station sans navetteurs ; Fifth Avenue sans voitures, les vendeurs, les travailleurs ou les clients. Non seulement ces photographies permettent aux téléspectateurs d’apprécier la splendeur architecturale et spatiale de ces icônes de la ville de New York, ils évoquent aussi un sentiment de rêve qui est rare dans les représentations visuelles de la ville. Timeless, mais indéniablement contemporaine, cette collection par un photographe de renommée internationale est un ajout important au panthéon des essais photographiques de New York la plus aimée des paramètres.

À partir de Coney Island en 1972 et se terminant à Times Square en 2006, le livre couvre trois décennies et demie de rencontres avec des personnes dans les rues de New York avec le photographe Jerry Thompson Jerry Thompson a combiné les photographies avec des citations, chacun se rapportant à l’objet, à partir de sources aussi diverses que Shakespeare et Stendhal, Aristote et Heidegger, Walker Evans et de Lincoln Kirstein. Ils suggèrent une conversation destiné à concentrer l’attention du spectateur, de stimuler sa réflexion, et de développer sa curiosité sur ce que c’est que des images et le fait de regarder des images peut-être capable d’accomplir.
